Bluebird Garden Tips
Fall in the garden is a time to prepare for winter and dream of spring. Dead-head those perennials that are notorious seeders in your garden.
Don't cut back grasses and structural perennials until spring. They can add winter interest and also help trap snow for insulation.
Woodland wildflowers, in the garden, like a thin layer of ground or chopped leaves as a winter mulch. If you add leaves to the garden in the fall, make sure you don't add tree or weed seeds. Ground/chopped leaves don't blow away as easily and do not mat down as tightly. Don't go too thick with the mulch or you will need to remove it in the spring. Too thick of mulch would trap the newly emerging shoots. One inch of mulch should be sufficient.
If you've had as dry a fall as we have, a thorough watering might be advised.
Fall is also a great time to make hypertufa troughs. This would give them plenty of time to cure before spring!
